You can be in wonderful health in every other way but having a few swellings and blisters on your foot can easily turn a good backpacking excursion into a survival condition. Foot Care Prevention Problems

- Take an additional pair of clean dry socks. Clean a pair in a stream when necessary and hang them from your backpack to dry.

- Give your feet some air every now and then. Stop hiking at least every couple hours to take off your shoes cool your feet.

- Take care of hot spots as early as possible and don’t let hot areas develop into blisters

- Do not use hiking boots unless you need ankle hold up. Use running shoes instead as they are less likely to cause swellings.

- Know your limits. Don’t keep climbing once your feet are getting too uncomfortable.

- Tighten the shoe laces near the ankles when going downward; it will prevent your toes from blocking against the front of the shoes.
